Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

Scenic Sunday – Oh deer, I miss you

a812 Mule deer in the backyard NR GRCA NP AZ (800x600)

As people moved out on the North Rim the deer moved in. One morning I saw a group of does outside my window browsing under the pines. They’re fattening up for the winter ahead. When I return in the spring they will all be skinny.

Kruger National Park South Africa – Day 3

02 Sunrise Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x598)

Every day at Kruger began with a beautiful sunrise.

03 Guinea fowl Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x599)

After breakfast, and no we didn’t have guinea fowl although we threatened to every morning,

04 Giraffe Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (600x800)

Joan and I headed out into the wilds to see who we could see looking at us.

05 Banded Mongoose Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x621)

These banded mongoose were just waking up and playing in the sun.

06 Bones Muzandzeni Picnic Site Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (598x800)

Stopped for more coffee at the Muzandzeni Picnic Site. You can only get out of your vehicle in designated and fenced areas. Right Joan? ;)

07 Baboons (800x444)

This is to protect you from animals like the baboons, whom I believe Joan described as the nastiest critters around.

08 Black backed Jacal Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x672)

Back out cruising the road we saw this black-backed jackal stroll out of the bush.

09 Tailless Elephant Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x599)

And watched this tailless elephant take a dust bath,

10 Elephants bathing Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x599)

while the ladies took a proper bath nearby.

11 Saddle billed stork Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x648)

And this saddle-billed stork fished for lunch.

12 Cliff Springer Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (599x800)

An elusive cliff springer watched us from on high.

13 Lower Sabie Rest Camp Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x353)

Lower Sabie Rest Camp, where we hoped to stay, was full so instead we hung out at the swimming pool for a while.

14 Hippos Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x471)

Which we didn’t have to share with the hippos.

15 Warthog Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (699x800)

On the way back to Sukuza Rest Camp for the night we saw several warthogs.

16 Buffalo Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x600)

And a buffalo crossed the road. Another amazing day at Kruger National Park with two more to go.

Mike watching the sky while on yesterday’s hike into the Weaver Mountains. More about that in previous post.

Welcome Home Walk in the Weavers

01 Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

I went for a walk in the Weaver Mountains yesterday

02 Mike Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

with my true love.

03 Heart shaped prickly pear cactus Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x599)

This would make for a prickly valentine.

04 Prickly pear cactus fruit Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x591)

As did the luscious fruit

05 Inside prickly pear cactus fruit Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

when I ate a small piece and got a tiny hair-fine spine in my tongue.

06 Two-trick into the Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x583)

So nice to have this remote high desert place with a rarely used gravel two track within a mile of home.

07 Deer track Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

We didn’t walk alone.

08 Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

I’ve posted these dynamically carved ridges before (here and here).

09 Granite Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

Made up of granitic plutons exposed to the surface by the power of erosion over time.

10 Dried flowers against the sky Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

There are 4-9 acre lots for sale here that are priced sky high.

11 Two Ravens harrass a Redtail hawk above Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x740)

But ya’ gotta’ have a dream.

12 Ravens in tree Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

We walked up to a different lot than last time.

13 View of Congress from Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ pano (800x147)

What a grand view of Congress in the valley about 2000 feet (609.6 m) below,

14 View of Congress & beyond from Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x599)

and beyond perhaps 60 miles (96.5 km).

15 Vantage rock of Congress view Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x578)

It may not be like looking into the Grand Canyon but from this vantage will do for a while.

16 Eroded granite along dry wash Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x396)

Our return walk followed a dry wash where the old yet recent flows of water revealed its erosive power.

17 Bright galls on oak Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (800x600)

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon for a walk in the high desert Weaver Mountains yet the bright ornament-like galls on this oak reminded me of Christmas coming.

Kruger National Park South Africa – Day 2

OK, now that I have six months off work I might have time to post more about the adventure of my life. Well, other than the current adventure of life.

02 Sunrise Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x591)

If you’ll remember, Joan and I saw ALL the BIG 5 on our first day in Kruger National Park. You might think that would be hard to beat. No way. Joan had me up before sunrise every day. Of course she also had the coffee made, such a sweet woman.

03 Waterbuck Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x600)

We would be out the gate at sunrise, the best time to catch some animals like this waterbuck in the golden light.

04 Wildebeast giraffe zebra marabostork kudos (800x600)

wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, marabou storks, kudus

Then spend the morning slowing cruising the roads, scanning back and forth. By noon we’d seen over a dozen species.

05 Gaelyn driving Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x598)

Joan let me practice driving on the right side, seemingly wrong to me, of the vehicle and left side of the road.

06 Olifants Rest Camp (800x600)

And we had lunch at Oliphants Rest camp plus saw some Bug Lady wildlife.

07 Turtles Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x601)

Continuing on safari we were attacked by these turtles…

08 Crocodile Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x599)

…as this crocodile lay idly by…

09 Snake Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x737)

…and this snake tried to ignore our plight.

10 Baobab Tree Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (720x800)

But we were able to seek shelter, first under this ancient Baobab Tree,

11 Elephant skeleton Elephant Museum Letaba Rest Camp Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x590)

and then at Letaba Rest Camp where we hid in visited the Elephant Museum. (See what happens when the turtles get to you.)

12 Lion Night ride Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x771)

Back to camp for dinner and then a guided “Night Ride” with a very unfunny thought he was a comedian driver/guide.

13 Zebras Night ride Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x678)

We did get to see a few animals.

14 Sunset Night ride Kruger NP Mpumalanga ZA (800x536)

But the best part of the night ride was the sunset.   More to come.

Settling in

01 View of small truck, camper, car, little house, truck & 5th-wheel Yarnell AZ pano (800x227)

Mike and I spent yesterday cleaning and rearranging the little house. This time we’re moving in together. And we both have too much stuff for such a small place.

02 Living & bed room in little house Yarnell AZ (800x587)

That meant I wanted the computer desk by the only window you can see out when sitting down. The view is great once the slide in camper is back on the truck and not in front of the window.

03 Living room & kitchen in little house Yarnell AZ (800x590)

So we had to adjust things a little by moving the furniture in this one room house (OK, there’s a bathroom).

04 Mike leveling 5th-wheel Yarnell AZ (800x600)

Plus Mike got the 5th-wheel parked, leveled and hooked up. A real treat for me not having to do that alone. I sure love the way he spoils me.

05 Gaelyn's bookshelves in little house Yarnell AZ (800x600)

We’ve been slowly moving some things out of the 5th-wheel/closet.

06 New coat rack made by Mike in little house Yarnell AZ (800x517)

Mike made a coat rack

It won’t ALL fit in the little house, but I’ll be working some more things in here and there.
