Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes – South Africa

01 Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve Mpumalanga ZA (1024x766)

After visiting God’s Window in the Blyde River Nature Reserve Joan and I stopped at this most amazing geologic wonder.

02 Joan at Potholes Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve Mpumalanga ZA (1024x767)

Read about the interesting cultural history at Joan’s site here.

03 Potholes Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve Mpumalanga ZA (768x1024)

Named after Thomas Bourke who was involved in gold mining in the area.

04 Potholes Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve Mpumalanga ZA pano (600x1024)

Where the Blyde River (“river of joy”) and the Treur River (“river of sorrow”) meet, thousands of years of whirling soil-laden water carved surreal cylindrical rock sculptures.

05 Potholes Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve Mpumalanga ZA pano (554x1024)

This left behind a series of dark pools which contrast with the streaked white and yellow lichen covered rocks. The pools looked rather inviting for a place to soak but a long ways down with fast moving water.

06 Potholes Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve Mpumalanga ZA pano (1024x663)

We wandered around for a bit but had more places to visit that day, like the Three Rondawels, a future post.

Grand Canyon Lodge

01 Front entrance Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x767)

I’ve posted so many photos of Grand Canyon taken from the Lodge here on the North Rim I thought I should give you a tour of the place.

02 Deli in the Pines at Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x760)

Deli in the Pines

Built by Utah Parks Company and designed by Stanley Underwood who also designed the lodges at Zion, Bryce, Timberline and Yosemite. Today the Lodge is managed by Forever Resorts.

03 Main lobby & Navajo rug Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (653x1024)

Old Navajo rug hangs in the Main lobby

The original lodge built in 1928 burned to the ground only four years later from a kitchen fire and was rebuilt by 1937. Much of the old rock was reused.

04 Dining room in Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x750)

Dining room

There are no accommodations in the Lodge. Instead there are almost 100 cabins also built in 1928 which I’ll post about soon.

05 Auditorium & lights Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (711x1024)

Auditorium

In the old days the Lodge staff would perform skits and sing songs to entertain the guests. Now we give an evening slide program in the auditorium.

06 Mule rides sign above Mule desk in main lobby of Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (754x1024)

You can arrange a mule ride.

07 Brighty statue in sunroom of Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x757)

No, that’s not a mule. That’s a bronze statue of Brighty the burro, an icon of the North Rim located in the Lodge’s sunroom.

08 Main lobby from sunroom in Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

Main lobby from sunroom

19 Grand Lodge from overlook NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x757)

Grand Canyon Lodge is the most intact rustic hotel development in the National Park system remaining from the railroad era. Constructed of native Kaibab limestone and timber, the complex was designed to harmonize with its rocky and forested setting. The Grand Canyon Lodge was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

MWT – Foggy canyon

01 Dark clouds & fog above temples, canyon & Widforss Plateau from Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x515)

During summer monsoon season it could rain any day. But the visitors don’t really appreciate the disturbed view of the canyon. Pity for them they can’t just accept the beauty as it comes to them.

02 Widforss Plateau peaks out through fog from Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

The clouds and fog settled in and brought much needed rain all morning.

03 Clouds & fog over BAP from Bridle trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

Then by late afternoon openings provided secret glimpses of the beauty.

04 Bright Angel Point trail & point shrouded in clouds NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x761)

So I walked onto Bright Angel Point trail.

05 Clouds on temples & SR from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x283)  Found a rock to sit on and soaked in the view changing so fast I could barely capture a given moment.

06 Clouds & fog in Roaring Springs Canyon from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x757)

Both sides of the ridge displayed the peaceful mood of fog lifting from the heated depths.

07 Clouds on temples, SR & Widforss Plateau from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x386)  Good thing I wasn’t in uniform so nobody stopped to ask questions.

08 Clouds on temples from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x767)

It’s good to be incognito sometimes.

09 Fog covering temples from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

The canyon slid in and out of view.

10 Clouds roll over SR into canyon from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x764)

A table cloth of clouds flowed over the South Rim and into the canyon.

11 Fog rises from Transept Canyon from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (771x1024)

As some fog rose, more crept in to take its place.

12 Clouds & fog surround the temples from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

I just couldn’t walk away.

13 Fog enshrouds the temples from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

And kept taking more photos.

13 Fog in the canyon from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x406)  Feeling so fortunate to see the canyon, spend time with it. Unlike too many visitors who only stay for a fleeting moment, hours or a couple of days.

14 Raven on snag from BAP trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x734)

When I finally tore myself away at the end of my work day Raven said goodbye to me, but not to the canyon.
